We celebrated Christian Aid Week this year with our usual Soup Lunch. As a result of this, we were able to send just over £90 to Christian Aid. Many thanks go to all those who helped with the event, to those who came, to those who gave money because they couldn’t come, and to Janet Goforth, who laid on a stall of Third World handicraft items for people to buy.
On Sunday 24th May we had a special service of Thanksgiving for Samuel Derek Walton. Samuel’s parents, Stephen and Catherine (nee Sleight) were married here two years ago, and, as is proper, had Samuel baptized at their home church in Ormskirk. But they also wanted to have something here for the sake of many people who would not have gone over to Lancashire for the Baptism. We had a lovely occasion, and we sang a hymn they had had at their wedding - “Guide me, O thou great Redeemer” - and thought of little Samuel beginning his journey as a ‘pilgrim through this barren land’ and praying that he (and all of us) would learn to allow God to ‘hold me with thy powerful hand’.
On Sunday 29th June we are holding our fifth annual Barn Lunch at the Sleights’ Farm (by kind permission). This is usually a splendid event, with far more food than can reasonably be eaten by the assembled company. Proceeds go towards our ongoing church expenses.
In the evening there is to be a special Songs of Praise service at 6.30 in Church, with a guest speaker: the Revd Hugh McKee will be telling us a little about the remarkable work being done by the Leprosy Mission. This work, among some of the outcasts of society, was warmly espoused by Diana, Princess of Wales, and she was President of the Leprosy Mission until her untimely death. So, as well as enjoying singing hymns chosen by members of the congregation, we shall have something to learn which will inspire us.
On Saturday 5th July there is to be a Coffee Morning at Mrs Rambaut’s house, St Mary’s, from 10.30 to 12.30. There will be several stalls: cakes, garden produce, and one with ‘sundries’. Admission will be £1. It will be a chance to have a good look at the lovely garden (assuming the weather continues to be as fine as it has been for these last few weeks).
Andrew Minors and Zoe Hart who live at Gardham will be getting married on Friday 11th July, and we wish them both God’s richest blessing in their future life together. The annual sponsored cycle ride for the Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust will take place on Saturday 13th September and we are already making plans for it. A small group will go from Etton in the direction of Market Weighton, taking in a number of village churches, including Goodmanham, Nunburnholme, Hayton, Everingham and Sancton. For those who have less time to spare, there will be a shorter ride, which will see people back in Etton by lunch time.
